History :

Casa Vinicola Abbazia is located in S. Stefano Belbo, a small town near Monferrato, Langhe and Roero, in the heart of Piedmont region.

It’s vineyards, exposed to the warm Italian sun, are perfectly positioned on hillsides that, since the 9th Century, they have been producing quality wines such as the four DOCG and fifteen DOC wines.

The name Abbazia, which means "abbey", was selected because of the winery's proximity to the historical Benedectine monastery dating back to the 12th Century. This monastery was originally a Roman temple dedicated to Jupiter.

Today you will still find the paintings and sculptures from the era in the ancient chapel. The original winery was built in 1848 adjacent to the Benedictine Abbey, hence the name Abbazia di San Gaudenzio (Abbey of San Gaudenzio).

Initially the winery sold only bulk wines and over the years, under the expert guidance of Pietro Santero the patriarc of the Santero family, they have modernized their operation with the proper equipment to advance the plant technologically and to bottle their own wines effectively.

After three generations the Santero family is proud of the fact that they still own and operate their winery at such an historical site.

Today the main operation consists of a state of the art plant, which includes a vinification system, bottling lines, storage facilities, and administrative offices.

A second storage warehouse is located on the south side of town and a third plant, where Lambrusco wine is produced, is located in the Emilia-Romagna region (Northern central Italy).

Plans are being made presently to open a fourth plant just for the bottling of bulk wines.

Total cultivation is about 40 hectares (100 acres) of vineyards yielding between 500 and 600 metric tons of grapes per year, we obtain Moscato d'Asti, Barbera, Dolcetto, and others .

As the demand for their wines grew, they felt it necessary to begin contracting selected estates for their crops on a yearly basis.

They still personally crush the grapes and complete the wine-making process until they have achieved the quality and perfection required by their clients.
