Seymour Duncan Mines Gold Classic Covers Series Now Available in Gold Plated Finish
Monday, August 26, 1996

Santa Barbara, California - Vintage pickup sales have been golden for Seymour Duncan lately, so the pickup company with a penchant for vintage, has announced an extension to the Classic Covers™ range -- gold-plated, covered humbuckers. The pickup covers are custom-built from nickel silver, the same material as the original covered humbuckers designed by Seth Lover for Gibson, four decades ago. Seymour favors nickel silver over the commonly-used brass covers because, he says, "Brass sucks out the high end." The covers get a generous plating of pure, 24K "hard gold." However, unlike the original humbuckers, Duncan's Gold Classic Covers™ are double wax potted for squeal-free performance and elimination of microphonics and feedback.
The Gold Classic Covers™ series currently features four models: the '59™ Model, neck and bridge versions; the JB™ Model for bridge; and the Jazz™ neck version. The Gold Classic Cover '59™ is Duncan's "patent applied for" humbucker with vintage voicing and construction. This pickup is wound on an old Leesona Model 102 winding machine -- the same make and vintage used in Gibson's old Kalamazoo factory -- and features gold-plated screws; plain enamel wire; wood spacers; black paper tape; braided, single-conductor hookup cable; and Alnico magnets. The Gold Classic Cover JB™ bridge paired up with the Gold Classic Cover Jazz™ neck position is Seymour's favorite set up. This combination yields a high output bridge pickup with plenty of sustain and distortion and a bright and clear neck pickup with slightly lower output.
All Gold Classic Cover™ pickups are hand built in Seymour Duncan's Santa Barbara factory.
